The church was full, the attendees were anxious; the anticipation was over as Pastor Andy Manzano our speaker spoke to us about the incomparable Jesus at our “Behold the Man” campaign.
He hails from the beautiful island of Trinidad and has been in ministry for over 20 years. Accompanying Pastor Manzano is singing evangelist Beverly Burton who is from New York City.
The presentation started off with reminding us that many of Jesus’s Ministries were on a mountain and Jesus was also crucified on a mountain. He continued by speaking about the special connection that Peter, James and John had with Jesus and that the Lord will always reserve certain people for His agenda, not ours. The text for consideration was Matthew 17:1-8.
He compared Peter’s intention of wanting to build altars for Moses, Elijah and Jesus to wanting to recreate the trinity. It was pointed out that it was not just Peter, James on John who was on the mountain but satan himself – it was him that gave Peter the idea of building altars. He continued to expound on Peter’s desire and compared it ours.’ We might have a desire to do things but God has the decision’.
Peter, James and John were in a privileged position of being with Jesus and seeing Moses and Elias. However, they did not realise that being in a privileged position means having a greater responsibility as well as greater persecution – look at Joseph. He continued to encourage us to not get puffed up when God exalts us to the mountain because he might just decide to take us back to the valley. However, when we are in the valley we should not be dismayed because while there he will lead us beside still waters.
Like us Peter could not handle the mountaintop experience – he got carried away. Peter did not realise he was in a privileged position and because of that he missed the mark just like many of us. Peter was putting Moses and Elijah on the same level as Jesus not realising that Jesus stands on His own – see Matthew 17:5. Jesus is the authority of God, he had no sin.
In conclusion, Pastor Manzano encourages us not to miss the mark- we should listen to Jesus; never compare Him to anyone else because he is the way, unlike Mohammed, Buddha and Confucius. There is none like Him. When Jesus stands, He’s in first place – He’s Incomparable!
